CS2 Server on a VPS: SteamCMD, Tickrate, and DDoS Protection
TL;DR
In this guide, we will deploy a dedicated Linux Counter-Strike 2 server on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS using SteamCMD, configure the game mode, launch parameters, systemd, and firewall, and examine tickrate limitations and DDoS protection. For a small group, 4 vCPUs, 8 GB of RAM, an NVMe drive, and a 1 Gbit/s port are usually sufficient, but only the upstream provider can protect against volumetric DDoS.
- We use a separate system user
steaminstead of running CS2 as root. - We install the server from the official SteamCMD infrastructure using App ID
730. - We configure the game port, RCON, hostname, maps, modes, and automatic startup through systemd.
- We take into account that CS2 uses a subtick model: a single parameter
-tickrate 128does not turn a VPS into a “128-tick server.” - We open only the required UDP ports and separately check whether the hosting provider offers DDoS filtering.
- We create backups of the configuration, server files, and user data if plugins or statistics are used.
1. TL;DR
A CS2 server on a VPS is suitable for private matches, training, gaming communities, and small tournaments. The key parameters are the performance of one or more fast CPU cores, low latency to players, a stable network, and the availability of DDoS filtering on the data center’s side.
Step-by-step installation starts with a clean Ubuntu server. After SteamCMD is installed, the server downloads the CS2 files, runs under a separate user, and is managed using systemd commands. The configuration is stored separately from the binary files, so updates can be performed with minimal risk of losing settings.
2. Contents
The article is structured as a practical scenario: first, the VPS configuration is determined; then basic SSH protection is set up, SteamCMD and CS2 are installed, and finally configuration files, automatic startup, firewall, backups, and diagnostics are added.
The commands are intended for Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS in 2026. If Debian or another Linux system is used, package names and the location of SteamCMD may differ. Before running the commands, replace placeholder domains, IP addresses, and passwords with your own values.
3. What We Are Configuring and Why
What the Result Will Be
At the end, we will have a separate CS2 Dedicated Server available to players at an address such as 203.0.113.10:27015. It will start automatically after a reboot, restart after an unexpected termination, and receive updates through SteamCMD.
You can use the standard Competitive, Casual, Deathmatch, and Arms Race modes on the server, as well as configurations for training. Extended scenarios use server extensions and plugins such as SourceMod and MetaMod:Source. They should be installed only from trusted sources: third-party plugins gain access to the game process and may contain vulnerabilities.
| Component | Purpose | Location |
|---|---|---|
| SteamCMD | Downloading and updating server files | /opt/steamcmd |
| CS2 Dedicated Server | Game process | /srv/cs2 |
| Configuration files | Ports, modes, maps, and rules | /srv/cs2/game/csgo/cfg |
| systemd unit | Automatic startup and restart | /etc/systemd/system/cs2.service |
| Logs | Diagnosing startups and errors | journald and CS2 files |
Self-hosted Versus Managed Game Server
Cloud game hosting saves time: the control panel creates the instance, installs updates, and sometimes offers built-in DDoS protection. The disadvantages are limited Linux access, paid additional slots, dependence on specific mods, and less control over logs and the network.
Self-hosted CS2 on a VPS provides full access to systemd, the firewall, the file system, monitoring, and automation. This is convenient if the server is part of your own infrastructure or a non-standard mode is required. Responsibility for updates, backups, secrets, and network security rests with the owner.
What Should Not Be Confused
A game Dedicated Server is not an ordinary Steam client. Do not run a graphical interface, Steam client, or desktop on the server. Players connect using the CS2 game installed on their own devices, while the server only needs the dedicated server files and network access.
A CS2 server also does not need HTTPS. The game protocol uses UDP, while TLS is used for the control panel, API, web statistics, or a healthcheck service. Do not place a web panel on the same public port where the game server is running.
4. What VPS Configuration Is Needed for This Task
Minimum Requirements
For 5–10 players on a standard map, 2 vCPUs and 4 GB of RAM may technically be enough, but this configuration leaves little room for updates, monitoring, and background processes. For stable gameplay, it is better to start with 4 vCPUs, 8 GB of RAM, and a fast NVMe drive.
| Scenario | CPU | RAM | Drive | Network |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Personal server for up to 5 players | 2 fast vCPUs | 4 GB | 40 GB NVMe | 100 Mbit/s |
| 10–12 players | 4 vCPUs | 8 GB | 60 GB NVMe | 1 Gbit/s |
| 20 players or plugins | 6–8 vCPUs | 12–16 GB | 80–120 GB NVMe | 1 Gbit/s |
| Several instances | 8–16 dedicated vCPUs | 16–32 GB | 160 GB or more | 1 Gbit/s or higher |
CPU frequency and predictability are more important than the nominal number of cores. A game server is sensitive to single-thread latency, so 4 fast cores without significant overselling are often better than 8 slow shared vCPUs. Check with the provider whether dedicated CPUs are used, what the oversubscription policy is, and whether there are PPS limits.
Practical Configuration
For one server with 10–12 players, you can choose a suitable VPS with 4 vCPUs, 8 GB of RAM, 80 GB NVMe, a public IPv4 address, KVM virtualization, and a 1 Gbit/s network port. It is desirable to have a provider console, snapshots, reverse DNS, and the ability to replace or add IPv6.
The drive is needed not only for the current CS2 files. Updates may temporarily require additional space, while logs, dumps, plugins, and archives quickly increase the volume. Keep at least 25–30% of free space and do not store the only backup copy on the same drive.
When to Choose Dedicated
A dedicated server is justified if you need several game instances, a large permanent player base, predictable performance, or databases, web services, and statistics systems running simultaneously. Physical cores reduce the impact of neighboring users and allow more precise CPU affinity configuration.
For one small CS2 server, dedicated hosting is usually excessive. It makes sense not because of the word “gaming,” but because of requirements for the number of instances, load stability, and bandwidth. If the problem is only DDoS, buying a more powerful server will not solve it: you need an upstream filter, not additional cores.
Choosing a Location
Place the server closer to the majority of players and check the route from their Internet providers. Distance affects RTT, while congested international links can cause packet loss even with a good ping to a neighboring region.
Before ordering, run tests to the test server IP addresses in several suitable data centers using ping, mtr, and, if possible, a UDP test. The ideal result is stable latency without packet loss, not the lowest average value from a single measurement.
5. Server Preparation
System Updates and Basic Packages
Connect to the VPS using the initial user with sudo access. Specify your own hostname in the commands. First, update the package index and install utilities for SSH, the firewall, diagnostics, and backups.
# Set a clear server name
sudo hostnamectl set-hostname cs2-01
# Update packages and install basic tools
sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade -y
sudo apt install -y ca-certificates curl wget gnupg unzip tar \
lib32gcc-s1 lib32stdc++6 tmux ufw fail2ban htop iotop \
net-tools dnsutils mtr-tiny jq restic
After the update, check the kernel version and available disk space. If the kernel was updated, reboot the server during an agreed maintenance window.
# Check the OS, kernel, memory, and disk
cat /etc/os-release
uname -r
free -h
df -h /
# A reboot is required if the kernel or system libraries were updated
sudo reboot
Separate User and SSH Key
Do not run SteamCMD and CS2 as root. Create a steam user with a home directory and a separate administrative user if one does not already exist. Use an Ed25519 SSH key for administration, and disable password login only after verifying the new key.
# Create a system user for game files
sudo adduser --disabled-password --gecos "" steam
# Create an administrator if necessary
sudo adduser deploy
sudo usermod -aG sudo deploy
# Create the SSH directory for deploy
sudo install -d -m 700 -o deploy -g deploy /home/deploy/.ssh
On your local computer, generate a key if you do not already have one and copy the public part to the server.
# Run on your local computer
ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -C "cs2-admin"
# Replace the address with the server IP
ssh-copy-id [email protected]
# Test the new login in a separate window
ssh [email protected]
After a successful login, create a drop-in for SSH. Do not close the current session until you have tested the new one.
# Allow key-based authentication only
sudo tee /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/10-hardening.conf > /dev/null <<'EOF'
PermitRootLogin no
PasswordAuthentication no
KbdInteractiveAuthentication no
PubkeyAuthentication yes
MaxAuthTries 3
EOF
# Check the syntax and reload the configuration
sudo sshd -t && sudo systemctl reload ssh
Firewall and fail2ban
Game servers usually require UDP port 27015. The TCP port with the same number is sometimes required for specific functions or tools, but open it only when necessary. Allow SSH before enabling the deny policy.
# Allow SSH and the game port
sudo ufw default deny incoming
sudo ufw default allow outgoing
sudo ufw allow 22/tcp
sudo ufw allow 27015/udp
sudo ufw allow 27015/tcp
# Enable the firewall and check the rules
sudo ufw --force enable
sudo ufw status verbose
# Enable SSH protection against password-guessing attacks
sudo systemctl enable --now fail2ban
sudo fail2ban-client status sshd
If SSH runs on a non-standard port, replace the 22/tcp rule. Changing the port number by itself is not serious protection, but it reduces the amount of automated background scanning. Real protection consists of keys, disabling root, and restricting access by IP or VPN.
6. Software Installation — Step by Step
Step 1. Preparing Directories
SteamCMD is available as an Ubuntu package and as an archive from Valve. The package is easier to maintain and suitable for a standard installation. The game files will be stored separately so they can be updated without modifying system directories.
# Create directories and assign the steam owner
sudo install -d -m 755 -o steam -g steam /opt/steamcmd
sudo install -d -m 755 -o steam -g steam /srv/cs2
sudo install -d -m 755 -o steam -g steam /var/log/cs2
# Allow steam to read and update its own files
sudo chown -R steam:steam /opt/steamcmd /srv/cs2 /var/log/cs2
Step 2. Installing SteamCMD
On Ubuntu 24.04, the SteamCMD package may be located in the multiverse component. The SteamCMD version is not fixed like the CS2 version: when launched, the utility retrieves the current client files itself.
# Enable the multiverse repository with 32-bit libraries
sudo add-apt-repository multiverse
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt update
# Install SteamCMD and required runtime libraries
sudo apt install -y steamcmd lib32gcc-s1 lib32stdc++6
# Copy the launcher to a separate directory
sudo cp -a /usr/games/steamcmd /opt/steamcmd/steamcmd.sh
sudo chown -R steam:steam /opt/steamcmd
Make sure the binary runs as the steam user.
# Verify SteamCMD launches without root
sudo -u steam /opt/steamcmd/steamcmd.sh +quit
Step 3. Downloading the CS2 Dedicated Server
App ID 730 is used for the dedicated server. Depending on Valve's current policy, server files may be downloaded through anonymous login. If SteamCMD requires authentication, use a separate Steam account without valuable items and do not store the password in shell history.
# Download or update the CS2 server in /srv/cs2
sudo -u steam /opt/steamcmd/steamcmd.sh \
+force_install_dir /srv/cs2 \
+login anonymous \
+app_update 730 validate \
+quit
The validate parameter checks local files and may significantly increase update time. For regular updates, app_update 730 is sufficient. After downloading, check for the executable file and the directory size.
# Check the main directories and installation size
sudo -u steam find /srv/cs2/game/bin -maxdepth 2 -type f | head
du -sh /srv/cs2
ls -la /srv/cs2/game/csgo/cfg
Step 4. Launch Script
Launch parameters will be placed in a separate file. This simplifies updating the systemd unit and avoids duplicating a long command in multiple places. For a private server, set the password through an environment variable or a file with 600 permissions; do not publish it in configuration that is committed to Git.
# Create a variables file with restricted access
sudo install -o steam -g steam -m 600 /dev/null /srv/cs2/cs2.env
# Write the basic server parameters
sudo tee /srv/cs2/cs2.env > /dev/null <<'EOF'
CS2_PORT=27015
CS2_HOSTNAME=Private CS2 Server
CS2_RCON_PASSWORD=CHANGE_THIS_TO_A_LONG_RANDOM_SECRET
CS2_TOKEN=
EOF
sudo chown steam:steam /srv/cs2/cs2.env
sudo chmod 600 /srv/cs2/cs2.env
Generate a long secret without spaces and substitute it for the temporary value.
# Generate a random password for RCON
openssl rand -base64 32
Step 5. systemd Unit
The service runs in the game's working directory. The -dedicated, -console, -usercon, and +game_type parameters provide a practical baseline for a standard server. Specific game modes can be changed through configuration files and commands.
# Create the CS2 systemd service
sudo tee /etc/systemd/system/cs2.service > /dev/null <<'EOF'
[Unit]
Description=Counter-Strike 2 Dedicated Server
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=steam
Group=steam
WorkingDirectory=/srv/cs2
EnvironmentFile=/srv/cs2/cs2.env
ExecStart=/bin/bash -lc 'exec /srv/cs2/game/bin/linuxsteamrt64/cs2 -dedicated -console -usercon -port ${CS2_PORT} +hostname "${CS2_HOSTNAME}" +map de_dust2 +game_type 0 +game_mode 1'
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10
LimitNOFILE=1048576
Nice=-5
UMask=0027
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
EOF
# Reload unit files and enable autostart
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now cs2
# Check the status and recent messages
sudo systemctl status cs2 --no-pager
sudo journalctl -u cs2 -n 80 --no-pager
The path to the binary may change in future CS2 updates. If systemd reports that the file was not found, search for it:
# Find the current server binary file
sudo -u steam find /srv/cs2/game -type f -name 'cs2' -o -name 'cs2_linux64'
Step 6. Updating Through a Separate Script
Do not run SteamCMD while the server is running: an update may replace libraries during gameplay. Use a maintenance window, stop the service, update the files, and start it again.
# Create a safe CS2 update script
sudo tee /usr/local/sbin/update-cs2 > /dev/null <<'EOF'
#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -euo pipefail
systemctl stop cs2
runuser -u steam -- /opt/steamcmd/steamcmd.sh \
+force_install_dir /srv/cs2 \
+login anonymous \
+app_update 730 \
+quit
systemctl start cs2
systemctl --no-pager --full status cs2
EOF
# Restrict script execution to administrators
sudo chmod 750 /usr/local/sbin/update-cs2
sudo chown root:root /usr/local/sbin/update-cs2
# Run the update manually
sudo /usr/local/sbin/update-cs2
7. Configuration
Main Game Configuration
Create the server.cfg file. CS2 reads it from the game/csgo/cfg directory. It is better not to store the RCON secret in a repository, but it must be available to the process for normal loading of the game configuration. It is safer to pass it through a separate file with 600 permissions and restrict access to the server.
# Create the configuration directory
sudo install -d -o steam -g steam -m 750 /srv/cs2/game/csgo/cfg
# Create the basic server configuration
sudo -u steam tee /srv/cs2/game/csgo/cfg/server.cfg > /dev/null <<'EOF'
hostname "Private CS2 Server"
sv_cheats 0
sv_lan 0
sv_hibernate_when_empty 0
sv_hibernate_postgame_delay 0
sv_hibernate_ms 0
mp_autoteambalance 1
mp_limitteams 1
mp_freezetime 12
mp_roundtime 1.92
mp_roundtime_defuse 1.92
mp_maxrounds 24
mp_c4timer 40
mp_buytime 20
mp_buy_anywhere 0
mp_startmoney 800
mp_restartgame 0
sv_logfile 1
sv_log_onefile 0
sv_logbans 1
sv_logecho 1
EOF
# Restrict configuration writing for the steam user
sudo chown steam:steam /srv/cs2/game/csgo/cfg/server.cfg
sudo chmod 640 /srv/cs2/game/csgo/cfg/server.cfg
The de_dust2 map name in systemd can be replaced with another map. To manually change the map through the console, use the changelevel de_mirage command. Do not add sv_cheats 1 to a public server: it changes the rules of the game and may affect player trust.
Modes and Tick Rate
CS2 uses a subtick architecture. In the traditional sense, tickrate is the number of full world-state updates per second. In the subtick system, the server additionally accounts for the exact timing of actions between network ticks, so the comparison of “64 versus 128” no longer describes the entire input-processing process.
The -tickrate 128 parameter is sometimes found in older guides and configurations. It does not guarantee that the server will operate like the previous 128-tick server, and in the current version of the game, some behavior is controlled by the engine itself. Do not substitute this parameter for measuring network quality.
Check the server using several indicators:
- stable player RTT;
- no packet loss or sharp jitter spikes;
- single CPU-thread utilization without sustained 100% saturation;
- no server hitches or processing delays;
- correct operation of the selected game mode.
Do not install questionable “tickrate patches” for a competitive server. They may break updates, conflict with the current CS2 architecture, or create client incompatibility. First update the server to the current version and compare the result using a clean configuration without plugins.
GSLT and Public Server
A public game server may require a Game Server Login Token. The token links the server to an account and is used according to Steam rules. Do not publish it in chats, Git, systemd units, or publicly accessible logs. If the token is compromised, revoke it and create a new one.
Store the token in /srv/cs2/cs2.env or in a separate file with 600 permissions. The exact variable and delivery method may depend on the current version of the server launcher, so check the current launch output and Valve documentation before making the server public.
Checking the Process and Port
# Check the CS2 service and process
systemctl is-active cs2
pgrep -a cs2
# Check whether the UDP port is listening
sudo ss -lunp | grep 27015
# Check CPU and memory usage
ps -eo pid,user,pcpu,pmem,cmd --sort=-pcpu | head -n 10
free -h
Checking UDP from another computer is more difficult than checking TCP. You can use Steam Server Browser, connect from the CS2 client, and use provider network monitoring. The nc -z command for UDP does not provide reliable confirmation: the absence of a TCP response does not mean that the game UDP port is closed.
Management Through RCON
RCON allows commands to be executed remotely, but it is an additional attack surface. Use a long password, do not open a separate RCON port unless necessary, and restrict administrative access by IP. If permanent remote management is required, it is safer to organize access through WireGuard or an administrative bastion.
Do not pass the RCON password in public scripts. After changing the password, restart the service and verify that old connections do not persist. Review RCON logs regularly, especially if the server is accessible from the internet.
HTTPS for Monitoring
The CS2 game protocol does not need Caddy or Certbot. HTTPS is useful only for a separate web service, such as a healthcheck, statistics page, or internal panel. The web service should listen on localhost, while Caddy should accept external traffic on 443 and automatically obtain a certificate for the domain.
# Install Caddy from the official Debian package repository
sudo apt install -y caddy
# Create a simple healthcheck file
sudo install -d -o www-data -g www-data -m 755 /var/www/cs2
echo 'CS2 host is reachable' | sudo tee /var/www/cs2/index.html
# Set the domain and website root directory
sudo tee /etc/caddy/Caddyfile > /dev/null <<'EOF'
cs2-status.example.com {
root /var/www/cs2
file_server
header {
Cache-Control "no-store"
}
}
EOF
# Check Caddy and restart it
sudo caddy validate --config /etc/caddy/Caddyfile
sudo systemctl enable --now caddy
sudo systemctl reload caddy
# Open HTTPS only for web status
sudo ufw allow 443/tcp
For this example, the DNS record cs2-status.example.com must point to the VPS IP, and ports 80 and 443 must be accessible for certificate issuance and renewal. Do not publish the entire /srv/cs2 directory through Caddy: it may contain logs, tokens, and configurations.
DDoS Protection
DDoS attacks vary. A volumetric attack saturates a channel or port with numerous packets. A protocol attack consumes state tables and network resources. An application-level attack can generate a large number of seemingly legitimate requests to a panel or API. UFW and fail2ban are useful against scanning and brute-force attempts, but they will not stop a flow of tens of gigabits per second.
Check the following characteristics with your provider:
- whether permanent upstream filtering for UDP is available;
- what attack volume is specified and whether it is measured in bits, PPS, or both;
- whether game port 27015 is filtered rather than only web traffic;
- how quickly scrubbing is enabled and whether the provider notifies you of the event;
- whether the IP can be changed after an attack without extended downtime;
- whether NetFlow, traffic graphs, and network event logs are provided.
Do not use proxies intended for HTTP as universal CS2 protection: a typical CDN does not proxy game UDP traffic. In the event of a serious attack, the correct sequence is to report it to abuse/NOC, preserve temporary metrics, request filtering activation, and move the server to a new IP if necessary. Blocking individual addresses yourself only helps against small recurring attacks.
8. Backups and Maintenance
What to save
Clean CS2 binary files can usually be downloaded again, so configurations, the systemd unit, environment variables, plugins, maps, audit logs, and statistics data should be included in backups first. If a database is used, it must be exported logically rather than copying active InnoDB or PostgreSQL files without a consistent snapshot.
/srv/cs2/game/csgo/cfg— server settings;/srv/cs2/cs2.env— secrets, in encrypted storage;/etc/systemd/system/cs2.service— automatic startup;- SourceMod, MetaMod, map, and custom resource directories;
- database dumps, if used;
- the package list and custom update scripts.
Restic and external storage
For a simple scenario, use S3-compatible external storage. Keep access variables in a root-only file and the repository password separately. External storage must not be located on the same VPS and should preferably be in a different data center.
# Создаём каталог с секретами restic
sudo install -d -m 700 /etc/restic
sudo tee /etc/restic/cs2.env > /dev/null <<'EOF'
export RESTIC_REPOSITORY='s3:https://s3.example.com/cs2-backups'
export AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID='REPLACE_ME'
export AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY='REPLACE_ME'
export RESTIC_PASSWORD='REPLACE_WITH_A_LONG_REPOSITORY_PASSWORD'
EOF
sudo chmod 600 /etc/restic/cs2.env
# Инициализируем репозиторий один раз
sudo bash -c 'source /etc/restic/cs2.env && restic init'
Create a script that stops the server only when necessary. A short window is sufficient for configurations and plugins. If the server contains dynamic user data, coordinate the copy time or use a snapshot provided by the storage system.
# Создаём скрипт ежедневного бэкапа
sudo tee /usr/local/sbin/backup-cs2 > /dev/null <<'EOF'
#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -euo pipefail
source /etc/restic/cs2.env
restic backup \
/srv/cs2/game/csgo/cfg \
/srv/cs2/cs2.env \
/etc/systemd/system/cs2.service \
/usr/local/sbin/update-cs2 \
--tag cs2-config
restic forget \
--keep-daily 7 \
--keep-weekly 4 \
--keep-monthly 6 \
--prune
EOF
sudo chmod 700 /usr/local/sbin/backup-cs2
sudo chown root:root /usr/local/sbin/backup-cs2
# Проверяем резервное копирование вручную
sudo /usr/local/sbin/backup-cs2
sudo bash -c 'source /etc/restic/cs2.env && restic snapshots'
cron scheduler
Run backups at night or during periods of minimal player activity. Standard cron does not automatically report errors to the owner, so add logging to journald or configure notifications through an external monitoring service.
# Запускаем бэкап каждый день в 04:20
sudo tee /etc/cron.d/cs2-backup > /dev/null <<'EOF'
20 4 root /usr/local/sbin/backup-cs2 >> /var/log/cs2-backup.log 2>&1
EOF
sudo chmod 644 /etc/cron.d/cs2-backup
# Проверяем синтаксис заданий и журнал
sudo systemctl restart cron
sudo tail -n 30 /var/log/cs2-backup.log
A backup is considered functional only after a test restore. Once a month, create a temporary directory, restore a configuration into it, and verify that it can be read, the secrets are accessible, and the server can start after a clean installation.
Updates and maintenance window
CS2 updates may include client and server changes, so do not update a production instance during a match. First, perform the download on a test VPS or after a backup, then restart the server and check the port, map, plugins, and client connection.
For a single instance, a 10–20 minute maintenance window is suitable. For multiple servers, use sequential updates: first the test server, then the less important one, and finally the primary server. A full rolling update is impossible without a second game instance to which players can be temporarily moved.
Minimum monitoring
Monitor UDP port availability, systemd status, free disk space, RAM, CPU steal time, and network traffic. Emergency thresholds may include disk usage above 80%, sustained load average above the number of available cores, increasing packet loss, and repeated service restarts.
# Полезные проверки перед началом игрового вечера
systemctl is-active --quiet cs2 && echo "CS2: OK" || echo "CS2: DOWN"
df -h /
free -h
sudo ss -s
sudo journalctl -u cs2 --since "1 hour ago" --no-pager | tail -n 80
9. Troubleshooting and FAQ
The server does not start: “No such file or directory”
First, run systemctl status cs2 and review journalctl -u cs2 -n 100. A common cause is a changed binary path after an update, missing 32-bit libraries, or an incorrect directory owner. Check the file with find /srv/cs2/game -type f, install lib32gcc-s1, and run the binary manually as the steam user to see the original error.
SteamCMD returns a download error or the App ID does not install
Check DNS, outbound HTTPS, and free space: curl -I https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net, df -h. Run SteamCMD as the steam user and specify +force_install_dir before +login. If anonymous login is no longer allowed for a particular scenario, use a separate Steam account without valuable items and do not pass the password through the command line.
Players cannot see the server in the list
Verify that the service is active and listening on the public interface specifically: sudo ss -lunp | grep 27015. Then check UFW rules, the security group, and the network firewall in the VPS control panel. CS2 uses UDP, so a TCP check does not confirm game availability. Try connecting directly by IP address and port from the client, rather than searching by name only.
High ping or rubber-banding with low CPU usage
This is usually a routing, packet loss, jitter, or channel congestion issue rather than insufficient RAM. Compare mtr results from several player networks, VPS traffic graphs, and packet loss metrics. Check a nearby location, disable heavy plugins, and make sure backups or updates are not saturating the outbound channel. If losses begin outside the data center, the provider must investigate the issue.
Will the -tickrate 128 parameter help?
It does not guarantee a classic 128-tick mode. Modern CS2 uses subtick processing, so quality depends on the engine version, server load, latency, and packet loss. Do not add the parameter simply because it appears in old guides. First measure server stability with a clean configuration, then test changes on a separate instance.
What is the minimum suitable VPS configuration?
For a personal server with a few players, a reasonable minimum is 2 fast vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe, and a public IPv4 address. For stable play with 10–12 people, it is better to choose 4 vCPUs, 8 GB RAM, and a 1 Gbit/s port. The numbers are not the only important factor: clarify the availability of UDP DDoS filtering, CPU steal time, PPS limits, and data center geography. Leave disk and memory headroom for updates and plugins.
What should I choose for this task — VPS or dedicated?
A VPS is suitable for one server, a small group of players, and a moderate number of plugins. Dedicated should be chosen for multiple instances, a large community, sustained high load, or when guaranteed physical cores are required. However, dedicated does not replace DDoS protection: if the external channel is saturated, both the VPS and physical server are equally unavailable. First determine CPU and network requirements, then compare filtering costs.
UFW is enabled, but the server is still unavailable
Check the diagnostic order: sudo ufw status numbered, sudo ss -lunp, systemd status, and the firewall/security group in the provider panel. Make sure UDP is open, not just TCP, and that the port in systemd matches the port in the UFW rule. If IPv6 is used, the corresponding rule must also be allowed for IPv6, or IPv6 should be disabled correctly rather than left partially configured.
How can I protect myself from DDoS attacks?
On the server itself, you can restrict administrative ports, disable unnecessary services, configure rate limiting for the web panel, and quickly block obvious sources of junk traffic. However, this will not stop an attack that saturates the channel to the VPS. UDP gaming requires filtering at the provider network level or a specialized gaming scrubbing service. Save NOC contacts and an IP change plan in advance; do not rely on iptables alone.
Plugins or settings disappeared after an update
Check whether you overwrote the game/csgo directory with your own copy during restoration. Compare owners and permissions: files must be accessible to the steam user. Make sure plugins are compatible with the current version of CS2 and MetaMod:Source. If the issue appeared immediately after an update, stop the server, restore configurations from the backup, and temporarily run a clean version without extensions.
10. Conclusions and Next Steps
We have set up a manageable CS2 Dedicated Server on Ubuntu 24.04 with installation through SteamCMD, systemd automatic startup, basic game configurations, a firewall, and backups. For game quality, a stable CPU, a nearby location, and no packet loss are more important than a formal “128 tick” designation.
Next, add external monitoring, test restoration from Restic, and establish an update procedure. As player activity grows, you can move statistics and the web panel to a separate service, run a second game instance for the maintenance window, and switch to dedicated hardware with guaranteed cores and specialized UDP DDoS filtering under sustained high load.
