How to Enable Hugepages Support in KVM?

Virtualization is a great way to efficiently utilize server resources. However, for optimal performance, it’s important to properly configure the KVM hypervisor. In a previous post, we looked at how to configure hugepages in Linux, and today we’ll talk about how to enable hugepages support in KVM.

The hugepages feature in Linux allows you to increase system performance by reserving a portion of RAM for storing large pages. This is especially useful when working with virtual machines, as it reduces memory management overhead.

To enable hugepages support in KVM, you need to follow these steps:

  • Make sure you have KVM and QEMU installed on the server.
  • Open the file /etc/default/grub in any text editor.
  • Find the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX and add the parameter default_hugepagesz=1G hugepagesz=1G hugepages=16 to it.
  • Save the file and run the command sudo update-grub.
  • Reboot the server.

After completing these steps, hugepages support will be enabled in KVM, which will improve the performance of virtual machines. Don’t forget to check the functionality of the settings and perform the necessary tests before using them in production.
